Baby Video Monitor Review

 By

Parenting is hard, so tools that make it easier are always welcome. With a video baby monitor, you don’t have to be in the same room as a sleeping or playing child in order to maintain a watchful eye. Plus, these devices are particularly useful if you have a child with health or medical issues who requires constant supervision.

Video monitors have the advantage of letting you see what's going on with your baby even when you aren't in the same room. In fact, some let your monitor your baby on your smart phone so you can keep an eye on your child even while moving around the house. Some allow communication between you and your child. Others let you take pictures or record videos, which you can post on Facebook or other social media sites.

While there are a number of excellent video baby monitors on the market, the top-rated are Withings, iBaby Monitor, and WiFi Baby. For more information (like the difference between analog and digital monitors), check out our articles on video baby monitors.

Video Baby Monitors: What to Look For

We identified several key features to help you find the best monitor for you and your baby.

Video Monitoring
A video baby monitor is only as good as the picture it delivers. One with poor picture quality is really no better than a less-expensive, audio-only monitor. Some video features to look for include remote pan, tilt and zoom, which allow you to “follow” your baby using remote controls on the monitor.

Another key element of the video capability is the maximum range from which the monitor can transmit video images. Devices that work in conjunction with a mobile device have an unlimited range. Those that come with a video monitor generally have a range of 400 to 500 feet, though one video baby monitor in our review, the Samsung SEW-3037, has a range of 900 feet.

Video sleep/standby helps to conserve batteries and extend the time between charges. And if your job takes you away from home, Skype capability lets you check in from wherever you roam.

Audio Monitoring
A video baby monitor’s purpose is to immediately alert you to a problem or let you know the moment your baby wakes up. That’s why an effective sound system is crucial. All the monitors in our review provide excellent audio clarity with very little static. They also offer volume controls and nearly all allow for two-way talk. Most also have an audio-only mode, which lets you turn the video off, and a VOX mode, which turns the unit on or off based on the presence or absence of audible sound in the room, in order to conserve battery life.

Design
The monitors in our review let you observe your baby in a variety of settings. Some come with a belt clip for the monitor to improve your mobility while others include wall-mounting hardware for the camera.

If the model you choose comes with a monitor, look for one with rechargeable batteries that last about 8 to 10 hours. Uncommon features such as a room thermometer can keep you apprised of your baby's comfort level. The general look and feel of the camera is also important. Some monitors fit right in with the décor of your baby's nursery while others will lend a more contemporary feel to the room.

Help & Support
A final consideration is the level of help and support the manufacturer offers. For example, many manufacturers have toll-free numbers you can call if you have issues setting up your monitor or if you need to invoke the warranty. A few companies offer live chat.

The best video baby monitors provide all the features you need to feel as if you’re in the same room with your baby. Such devices let you interact with and observe your baby from different perspectives, day and night. We've compiled a comprehensive lineup of the best video baby monitors on the market so that you can make an informed decision as to which video baby monitor best meets your specific needs.
